Writing is a gym session for the brain
Four systems, one task
Working memory holds ideas while you arrange them · language centres hunt words and grammar · motor systems coordinate the typing or handwriting · executive control conducts it all simultaneously. Few everyday activities demand this much coordination.

Brain scans show regular writers have stronger connections between these regions; the white matter tracts linking them become measurably more robust with practice. Not a metaphor; anatomy.
MIT's "cognitive debt" experiment: the early warning
MIT researchers tracked 54 students over four months, comparing essay writing with ChatGPT, with search engines, and with brains alone. The AI group showed weaker brain-wave patterns associated with memory and deep thinking; and when later asked to write unassisted, their brains struggled to re-engage those networks.
To understand what we might lose, look at what humanity gained. Before writing, memory, tradition and law lived only in the voices of the living. Writing untethered knowledge from individual humans; it could suddenly be stored, sent across distances, and preserved beyond death.
Writing is the original cognitive technology; the first time our species outsourced part of its mind to an external tool. That makes its five-thousand-year history the best case study we have for what happens next; so the middle of this hour belongs to clay tablets, scribes and one very sassy Mesopotamian.
Writing was invented for accounting, not poetry
Grain, livestock, labour
The earliest inscriptions are not epics; they're stocktakes. Sumerian pictographs pressed into clay around 3000 BCE tracked commodities and labour for temple administrators.
Commerce demanded it
The Old Assyrian trade network ran on letters and contracts: textiles and tin travelling to Anatolia to be exchanged for silver, with partnerships, shipments and disputes managed in writing, across hundreds of miles.
From royal law to shopping for salt

The Laws of Hammurabi, carved on a monumental stone slab, were as much politics as law: topped with the king receiving the code from the sun-god Shamash, divine authority made permanent and public through writing.
Ostraca: notes on broken pots
Cheap pottery shards carried the everyday: instructions to buy salt, directions for mixing dough, sheep-shearing notes, family finances, and a farm labourer's petition for the return of a confiscated garment.
Literacy was a profession, not a skill
In the 16th century, Spanish authorities burned the books of the Maya. Of thousands of volumes holding a civilisation's mathematics and astronomy, four survive today.
When the small class who guarded written knowledge was eliminated, the knowledge went with them; within a generation, no one could read what remained. Cognitive technologies feel permanent and disappear astonishingly fast when the humans who embody the skill stop practising it. Keep that in mind whenever someone says a skill no longer needs to live in human heads because the tool will always be there.
Nearly four thousand years ago, a Mesopotamian was so exasperated at being left on read that he carved his complaint into clay with a reed stylus; cuneiform, "wedge-shaped", a system of over a thousand signs. The technology of communication keeps changing; the human urge to document our grievances is apparently eternal. Writing has always been personal, emotional and social; not just administrative.
